I was never as big a fan of Bryan Singer’s X-Men franchise as everyone else seemed to be. In fact I just don’t like Singer as a director, his moves are slick, professional and completely devoid of any inspiration.
As for this Brett Ratner character everyone hates, well I don’t know that I’ve seen any of his films to hold against him. So I like to think I went into this movie with a more open mind than Joe X-Men-Fan (a psuedoname).
X-Men 3 is obviously rushed, sloppy, at times badly written and still my favorite of the franchise. Magneto’s I-Dream-Of-Jeanie-esque hand gestures are toned down, Wolverine’s badass ferocity is amped up, Cyclops finally comes into his own as a character, Mystique continues to be a far better character than she was ever designed to be in the comic.
They’ve also added a ton of new characters with varied results. Juggernaut is one of the X-Men’s coolest villians but here, played by Vinnie Jones he’s a disasterous embarrasment. Some no name shows up briefly as multiple man for no particular reason. Colosus is short changed, Ben Foster is memorable as Angel in what is essentially a cameo, Kelsey Grammer isn’t nearly the disaster I expected as Beast. My favorite new character by far; Ellen Paige as Kitty Pride.
You probably know that this film has a body count, and I think that sort of off the books, non canonical territory is good for the franchise. The fact that this movie is willing to break the rules is it’s saving grace.
