How did I like my most anticipated film of the year? Well, I had two specific criteria for this movie. It had to be hillarious, and it had to be heart breaking. And it had do those two things at the same time.
Richard Linklater got it exactly right. This is the film he’s been preparing for all along. You can trace it’s lineage from Slacker to Dazed and Confused to Suburbia to Waking Life. How does the animation fare? It’s exactly right. I’ve seen countless films go through great effort and expense to replicate an acid trip. A Scanner Darkly slips in and out of linear sobriety, mind losing insanity and drug adled hilarity without even trying. Just like the book.
Keanu is perfect as Bob Arctor but the casting is almost too much of a no brainer. Robert Downey Jr is hillarious as well as my inspiration for this years halloween costume. Woody Harelson is probably just as good. But again, no points for degree of difficulty. I was glad to see noted conspiracy / new world order freak Alex Jones reprise his role from Waking Life.
