It wasn’t that long ago that Mike Bay was the go to guy for film snobs looking for some one to hate. And it wasn’t so long ago that I was among the ranks of haters. That Armageddon business was pure shit. And as for Pearl Harbor, I fully stand behind my decision to hate that film without ever having seen it.
But those days are coming to an end because slowly but surely Transformers has become the film to pin your hopes on. With a few exceptions all the news coming from this project has been good. The trailers and leaked footage have been fantastic. The early reviews have all been over-whelmingly positive. Bit by bit Transformers has earned its spot as the flick America is looking forward to, it’s set to be the entertainment salvation for Summer ‘07 after the disappointments of Spider-Man and Pirates 3.
The best thing Transformers has going for it is Spielberg on board as producer. I may be in the minority but I think Spielberg’s at the height of his career. In fact War of the Worlds is my favorite Spielberg movie.
Say what you will about Mikey Bay, I probably agree with most of it, but it’s hard for me to deny that chaotic, nonsensical action scenes possess a spark of genius. I suspect he’s a diamond in the rough and it’s possible that Spielberg may be the perfect mentor to show him the way.
I’m almost convinced that we’re in-store for something special, a seminal classic in the adventure genre. The type of fun carefree movie they excelled at making in the 80’s, something in the vein of Back to the Future or Raiders of the Last Ark.
Something about this clip makes me giddy, and is it me or does it look like Bay’s saccharine style has been fused with a page from the Janusz Kaminski playbook.
